Will my child have to “cry it out?”
I feel it’s important to address this here because it’s often the first thing associated with the words “sleep training”. As with potty training, there are many methods. Imagine if there were only *one* way to do everything we do in our day-to-day lives. There wouldn’t be much use for teachers or specialists because you’d never get to see a differing opinion.
I would dare to say that no parent likes to hear their child cry, no matter their age. Most parents would probably say that they even try to keep their child from crying or attempt to lessen the time they spend crying for any number of reasons. But, children cry. It’s their way of communicating early in life and it’s their way of protesting change. You can expect that as you change your child’s sleeping habits, there will be some amount of protesting involved. You’ll be changing habits that are months or even years ingrained into your child. You will also know that you are doing what’s right and most beneficial to set your child up for sleep success into their adult lives.
The Sleep Sense Method allows for you, the parent, to be involved in the creation of a plan that you are comfortable with. I will absolutely not ever suggest that you leave your child to cry alone, disregard your gut feelings, or ignore your child’s cries.
I would love to answer any questions you have about The Sleep Sense Philosophy or give you the next steps to take toward better, more restorative sleep for your child and your family. I can be reached by email doris@sleep-still.com or by phone 340 2505904.
